The Ocean Blue

Event Details

$23 Advance and $28 Day of Show

Dine with us at Curio and receive Expedited Entry into The Chapel! When you kick off your evening with dinner and drinks at Curio, you'll be checked into the show right at your table and avoid the line outside. Be sure to tell us you're coming to the show when you make your reservation HERE.

The Ocean Blue

In 2024, the band will be playing a select number of shows, performing their first two albums in full - The Ocean Blue and Cerulean- in dates throughout the U.S. as they continue work on a new album. Getting their start as teenagers in the late ‘80s in Hershey, PA, The Ocean Blue released their self-titled debut on the famed Sire Records that launched many of their heroes in the U.S., like the Smiths and Echo & the Bunnymen. Embraced by MTV, the band quickly made their mark on the onset of the Alternative Music scene. Their early singles “Between Something And Nothing” and “Drifting, Falling” notched them Top Ten hits on College and Modern Rock radio, setting in motion a run of four successful major label albums, followed by a string beloved independent releases from 2000 to the present. With eight albums and several EPs under their belt (Sire/Rhino reissued their first three album in 2015), the band continues to do what it has always done with more plans for touring and releases on the horizon.

Bart & The Bedazzled (featuring Bart Davenport)

LA’s northeast side is home to a dizzying number of independent artists and bands. One of the scene’s most distinctive sounds emanates from Bart & The Bedazzled, a group led by bay area born singer-songwriter Bart Davenport. The core lineup brings together the jangly guitars of Wayne Faler with the soul beats of drummer/percussionist Andres Renteria and the post punk bass lines of Jessica Espeleta. The four friends, united in their affection for the “Elegant 80s” sounds of Prefab Sprout and Style Council give Bart’s songs a unique esthetic evident on the Aaron M. Olson produced ‘Blue Motel’ album. On their latest release, ‘People Person/Cardboard Man’ newcomer band member and producer Nic Hessler has created seamless mixes that showcase the group’s most collaborative effort to date.

The Antlers & Okkervil River

Event Details

$30 GA (Standing) and $45 GA (Seated)

The Antlers

The Antlers is both a band and the longtime musical moniker of Peter Silberman. In 2021 The Antlers released their first album in seven years Green to Gold, a bucolic record which Pitchfork described as “a post-rock orchestra playing around a campfire... the sound of hard won peace of mind, rendered in the lightest brush strokes.”

The release was followed by the Losing Light EP, a reimagining of four tracks from Green to Gold. Silberman also co-produced Wild Pink’s 2022 album ILYSM, marking his first foray into producing a record for another artist outside of the context of The Antlers or his solo work. Over the course of 2023, The Antlers released a series of stand-alone singles “Need Nothing,” “Tide,” “Rains,” and “I Was Not There.” Along with a reworking of “Ahimsa” from Silberman’s 2017 solo album Impermanence.

Silberman’s most recent project Cowboy Sadness - a collaboration between David Moore (Bing & Ruth) and Nicholas Principe (Port St Willow) - released their debut album Selected Jambient Works, Vol. 1 in January of 2024.

Okkervil River

Over the course of his career, Will Sheff has released ten albums that have given the front man of esteemed indie rock band Okkervil River a reputation as one of the greatest working songwriters in the country. As Sheff and his shifting lineup of players have traveled the world many times over, they’ve made fans ranging from Lou Reed to Barack Obama. Praised as “One of indie rock’s most ambitious thinkers” (Pitchfork), Sheff released his debut solo album ‘Nothing Special’ in 2022 to critical acclaim fromThe New Yorker, NPR, Uncut, Pitchfork and more...withThe New York Times saying it “Harnesses both the glow of poetry and the gravity of hymns.”

JEANNE FINLEY’s RED BOAT CROSSING + BARON’s NEAREST NEIGHBOR + NEW EXPERIMENTAL WORKS

Our seasonal mini-fest of innovation in film form, this Spring’s NEW night boasts a healthy crop of contemporary visions, each program-half anchored by the NorCal theatrical debut of a major essay from our State’s most esteemed women makers…both in person!

Yes, SF‘s Jeanne Finley and LA‘s Rebecca Baron are both in the house to introduce their sublimely smart cine-meditations—Finley‘s 40-min.

Red Boat Crossing on her mother’s European experience in WWII, and Baron‘s 20-min.

Nearest Neighbor–a collab with Cal Arts’ Doug Goodwin–on human communication with birds and computersBaron/Goodwin‘s provocative thought experiment is showcased in the opening half– they self-consciously exploit AI agency to generate novel image/sound relations, comparing and contrasting communication with animals to that with machines, thus affording new understandings of language acquisition in both Nature and Technology.

And in the program’s finaleFinley takes her camera back to France‘s southern coast, to the precise location of the Allied landing and where her mother, 65 years earlier, had served on a Red Cross ship, tending to the War wounded–the resulting footage later layered with memorabilia discovered in a long-lost family trunk, Captain‘s logs, letters, phone calls, and archival footage–all weaving a rich tapestry of memory, history, and heroism.

ALSO: The in-the-flesh return of Canadian whiz-kid Jake Scott with his 15-min. Live expanded-cinema piece On LeadershipTT Takemoto‘s lovely Lion in the WindAlex Miller’s Denis Anatomy, and new shorts from Bryan Boyce, Yuyan Wang, and Others TBA!

Free pencils. $12
